Unlike some disc packs, the magnetic drum cannot be physically removed. The drum is permanently mounted on the device. Magnetic drums can retrieve data faster than disk or tape devices, but they cannot store as much data as any of them.
A magnetic drum is a magnetic storage device that was used in many early computers as the main working memory, much like modern computers use random access memory (RAM) cards. In some cases, the magnetic drum memory has also been used for secondary storage. It is basically a metal cylinder covered with a magnetic iron oxide material where changing magnetic polarities are used to store data on its surface, in the same way, that modern disk drives use magnetism. store and retrieve data.
